iPhone 14 pro max zooming glitch

I recently purchased my iPhone 14 pro max and when I tested out the new camera I noticed when zooming from 0.5 to 1x you see the camera lenses switch, which makes a jump on the video. It is very glitchy and not how this phone should be working, I contacted apple support and they said something is wrong with the phone, but I needed to go to the Apple Store to get it checked out, so I went to the store and the employee said there is something wrong, he even tested his camera (iPhone 14 pro max also) and it was smooth as butter. He replaced my phone and I finally get home to set it up and I am experiencing the same issue! I hard reset the phone, factory reset it, and made sure I am updated to the latest iOS 16.2. any other new iPhone users experiencing this?

I think I found the issue, there is a lock camera button in the camera settings that disables the switching between cameras when recording video. I enabled it and tried to zoom in and it did not glitch. Hopefully this is the solution.

I completely understand (I likely wouldn’t expect the issue again if I were in the same position) but since you got home with this one and the issue seems to still be there that’s why I said it would be a good idea to check in store before leaving…unless you don’t mind needing to go back again if the issue exists in another new device. Unfortunately, because I haven’t seen what you describe on any of the 14 pro max devices in my home now I just can’t come up with any assistance for you on that or guess if it’s a glitch and not a hardware issue (I just noticed you said you were updated to 16.2 but I assume you mean 16.0.2…or you are using a beta version although I would think that would be 16.1 and not 16.2). Curious…was the issue happening prior to upgrading iOS or was it like that even with the initial 16.0 iOS?

I’ve noticed the exact same issue. I also noticed that the focus is really poor. Even if I’m moving the camera slowly. The automatic blur of the background or foreground is horrid Le. For example, that if I’m recording something and I bring my finger in front of the camera to point something out it glitches and has a problem with refocusing. Super frustrating!

I found this thread as I have the same issue. A fix which I hope is temporary until Apple have a solution is use an app that does not change lens on zoom. Not ideal but I have been using FilmIC Pro. That has a button on screen where the required lens is picked and then the zoom is restricted to the ability of that lens. It does mean that one cannot zoom from full wide to full zoom but in the real world it is very rare to need that. Most of the time selecting the normal (1) lens covers every shot needed. I used to be involved in pro video production and a lot of zooming in and was considered very amateur.

I'm having the same problem and absolutely hate it. I saved up to buy the 14 pro after waiting years for a new phone to try and do vlogging and this jump especially between the 0.5 camera and the 1x camera is horrible!

What's weird is that if you zoom VERY slowly it's sometimes smooth but most time it just wobbles for a split second and and shifts image placement.

Absolutely NOT smooth. My partner has the iPhone 12 and I can't believe his video quality is better than my 14 pro because he doesn't get the jankiness happening with my phone.

Really hard to search if others are having this issue too because most search results are about the physical camera problem happening in apps instead of this separate issue happening in Apple's own video mode.

I do have a lens protector on my lenses as I didn't want them scratched. But I don't see how it would be that. I'm surprised not many people are talking about this issue.

Did you take off your Lens protector? Is it still happening for you?

This is helpful, thanks! I will try this out and report back! Usually I only want to zoom between 0.7x and 1.1x so I think this might be a helpful solution!

I will report back!

Also I tested this again with my partner's iPhone 11pro to see if it does the same thing.. it does but it's quite minimal compared to the 14 pro.

Hoping that future versions can give users more control over this. Would also like to see less auto-post processing.

Anyways, I digress; I'll report back with the macro options disabled and see how I get on! I had it enabled for control over photos but didn't realize it might have an option for videos as well.. as I didn't see it previously.. but maybe I'm not looking hard enough. Otherwise I will try on some third party apps suggested above. Thanks!

I just got my 14 pro two days ago and have the same skipping problem when zooming. I went to Apple to show them and they didn’t seem to be aware. We checked my phone and nothing solved the problem. They said it must be a software issue. But why hasn’t this been addressed by Apple with a potential solution? There’s a number of people with the same problem, even a friend that bought the same phone a month ago. Very disappointing given the price of the phone and hype around the new camera.

Apple said to restore my phone as a last resort, and if the issue doesn’t go away to go back to the store.

This does seem more noticeable on the 14 than it was on my 12 but my solution is use a video recording app that works in a different way. I use Filmic but this is not an advert for them and there may be others that do the same job.

The app I use has a selector to choose between the three forward facing lenses and the selfie lens. Once the lens is chosen the zoom will only work within the limits of that lens. That would seem to be a big restriction but with a little planing it is rare to need a shot that covers the range of all lenses and if I am just recording for personal use, holiday shots for example, the slight jump is not an issue. I find this app is better if zooming anyway as it has a single finger zoom slider on the right edge of the screen which gives a smoother image than the standard options.

I think we all use the zoom too much anyway. I worked in commercial video recording years back with big heavy shoulder mounted cameras which made it a lot easier to get a steady shot but the zoom was more often used to frame the shot or just zoom in to focus than it was to actually record while zooming.

Thanks, that’s a good solution. It does make sense that it happens when you think of it technically. The assumption is that the iPhone is able to avoid that.

Maybe Apple can do a software update that gives you the option to lock your camera on a certain lens, like the app you mention. I think issues like this skipping need to be made aware to customers before they purchase.
