iPhone 14 pro max zooming glitch

I recently purchased my iPhone 14 pro max and when I tested out the new camera I noticed when zooming from 0.5 to 1x you see the camera lenses switch, which makes a jump on the video. It is very glitchy and not how this phone should be working, I contacted apple support and they said something is wrong with the phone, but I needed to go to the Apple Store to get it checked out, so I went to the store and the employee said there is something wrong, he even tested his camera (iPhone 14 pro max also) and it was smooth as butter. He replaced my phone and I finally get home to set it up and I am experiencing the same issue! I hard reset the phone, factory reset it, and made sure I am updated to the latest iOS 16.2. any other new iPhone users experiencing this?

I have contacted Apple support and even send video samples and demonstrated the issue remotely to them. Customer service officer Brian assisted me and sent this “issue” to their engineering team.

He got back to me a week later with their engineers reply.

“it is suppose to work like this and there is nothing wrong, so no patches or update will be made on this issue”

and the case is closed.

i can’t say much, but only feel disappointed on this.

Which means it always uses digital zoom, which means much worse picture quality.

Is there a solution or is it hardware related?

Is there anywhere I can upload a video which has the issue?

Anything over 3x zoom at present is a digital zoom, so what you are likely seeing is the shift from optical zoom to (far inferior) digital zoom.

I am having the same issue. Taken to Apple Store , they can’t do anything. They say nothing wrong with the 3 camera’s. Also check Apple community for any solutions.

Are you sure what you’re seeing isn’t the camera focusing? At any rate…no I haven’t noticed an issue on mine. You can take the new one back if you like and if they replace it again open it before you leave the store to avoid any issues.

Ok. Again, I haven’t experienced the issue so I can’t help you with that. You will need to take it back, hope they have another device in stock to replace yours with again if they deem it needs to be replaced…and it would be a good idea to open before leaving and check that it works as you expect.

I did open and transfer over the esim and as I was restoring my phone it failed and he recommended me to go home and restore again. I would not expect the same issue to happen with another new phone and he said it should be fine. So I took the advice of the Apple technician. Thanks for your help.

I completely understand (I likely wouldn’t expect the issue again if I were in the same position) but since you got home with this one and the issue seems to still be there that’s why I said it would be a good idea to check in store before leaving…unless you don’t mind needing to go back again if the issue exists in another new device. Unfortunately, because I haven’t seen what you describe on any of the 14 pro max devices in my home now I just can’t come up with any assistance for you on that or guess if it’s a glitch and not a hardware issue (I just noticed you said you were updated to 16.2 but I assume you mean 16.0.2…or you are using a beta version although I would think that would be 16.1 and not 16.2). Curious…was the issue happening prior to upgrading iOS or was it like that even with the initial 16.0 iOS?

Ok. Well then all I can say is you might need to head back to the store. I know some had issues camera in 3rd party apps but you didn’t say you were using social media or anything (if so…then that’s a known issue and Apple attempted to fix it with 16.0.2. Some have said the issue remained)…
