Are the chargers for iPad 11 and iPhone 11 interchangeable?

I have an iPad Pro 11” 2nd generation. I also have an iPhone 11. Both charging ports look like the same lightening connector, but they won’t fit in the other device and apparently aren’t interchangeable. Is this right, or am I doing something wrong?
