Hey roaringwillie,

That's a great question! It looks like you checked out the right article for your question. If you see step 3 where it says 'Download macOS Monterey', you can see the option to select a link to download macOS Monterey. This means that you can upgrade your macOS to Monterey directly if your Mac is compatible with the macOS. To see if your Mac is is compatible, check step 1 from the article for more info.

Before you upgrade your macOS, we highly recommend that you back up your device to make sure that your important data are backed up. There are multiple methods to back up your Mac and the methods can be found on this link here: Back up your Mac

If you select Time Machine as your backup method, follow these steps below:

1. Connect an external storage device, such as a USB or Thunderbolt drive. Learn more about backup disks that you can use with Time Machine.
2. Open Time Machine preferences from the Time Machine menu  in the menu bar. Or choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Time Machine.
3. Click Select Backup Disk.
4. Select the name of your disk, then click Use Disk. Time Machine immediately begins making periodic backups—automatically and without further action by you.

We hope this helps!

Best regards.
