With 64 GB of available space is it time for a new computer?

The MacAir 2013 only has a total of 121 GB available space on the hard drive. Since upgrading to Catalina from Mojave, the new OS took up more space than just replacing Mojave, and seems to use

sometimes 1GB of space a day without my doing anything on the computer; with 64 GB remaining that only would mean obviously too little remaining in just two months. Is it time for me to purchase a new computer? Do I need to be aware of how much available space is needed if Migration Assistant or other means of moving data from this 2013 to a new (LARGER CAPACITY) Mac?

I am not aware of the "glitches" you are referring to. I have used Migration Assistant a number of times to transfer date to a new computer and never had an issue when it was done correctly. Also, you do not transfer the operating system. The new computer already has it installed and all the data in the old computer is left intact. I believe that apple stores can assist you in transferring the data although you may have to make an appointment for that. The only problem I have seen with M.A. is when instructions are not followed correctly.

There can be several reasons for getting a new computer: available space, the age of the computer, how it's functioning for you and your desire to upgrade. If you are otherwise satisfied with your Mac you could add an external disk and then copy files onto it so they could be deleted from the Mac to clear storage. This is an inexpensive and easy solution you might also consider.

Also, as an observation that may tell a more advanced tech person than myself something about the OS and its functioning: I use F4 Launchpad to view the dock on the big screen and from there on Mojave it was very quick into the app chosen; now, since Catalina upgrade, not so quick in response, most especially with MacMail app - clicking that icon and i have to go back and click it twice for it even to respond at all - as I say, particularly with MacMail app. Does that behavior give you any clues about the way the computer is functioning - and why that might be the case?

I think that 64 GB of space might not b a problem in itself. You my have problems when attempting to install an upgrade OS. I do know that the available space can vary from day to day and to get an exact measurement you should use the Disk Utility app.

The speed the computer operates at is affected by the OS it's running, how many open apps there are and how much RAM is installed. It is true that the newer operating systems tend to use more RAM than earlier ones did. Certainly some apps such an antivirus apps will definitely slow down a computer as well.

You never said what year your Mac is. Keep in mind that anything older than five years old is subject to failure at some point. Of course a new Mac will be faster and have a more secure OS. Keep in mind that the newer computer likely will need to have some apps upgraded and that some cost may be involved. Any older 32 bit apps will have to be upgraded.

Sorry. It is a MacBook Air mid 2012, with Catalina OS 10.15.7 now installed. Also adding here in the next paragraph two other observations that can inform your opinion of if I should buy a new computer now or am I being too cautious and the Catalina mail issues are just 'Catalina' being itself?

I'd advise anyone with this year computer to stop upgrading at Mojave. One telephone Apple Support person said to stop at Mojave; should have listened; but another later said go to Big Sur. For some reason at some point there were issue with MacMail interacting with the contact app that i was told would only resolve by moving into Catalina. Now when I try to use the BCC line for recipients, the spinning ball appears between entries; as it also does during the spell check: all moving so so much slower and less smoothly than it did with Mojave.

Do I understand correctly, that Migration Assistant (MA) does not need any particular number of GBs in the available category to work without any glitches?

Some YouTube advisors, like David A. Cox, report that using MA to transfer data his customers find that "glitches" happen that require them to uninstall and reinstall the OS to work around. What is your opinion of that statement; have you also heard users indicate trouble with Migration Assistant. Do Apple Specialist stores usually offer this transferring from old to new computer as a service?

Ronasara, thank you for your patience in talking me through this.

Lastly, from what i have shared about MacMail in Catalina, do you see that as a Catalina issue/challenge that you have read about before; or is it a sign that a new computer is needed? The MacAir mid2013, 4GB Memory, 64 GB available, Catalina OS behavior that i've describe in this conversation and a slow start up (after Yosemite upgrade and more so now): are these symptoms indicating this a new computer would solve those issues, or just something in the Catalina OS that i need to learn how to work-around?

I have two thoughts for you. The Mail app seems to be subject to a lot of difficulties which are reported here on this forum. I don't like it. You have only 4 GB of RAM installed and are running Catalina which does require more RAM. You should have a minimum of 8 GB of RAM installed. More would be better. That will improve performance. Are you able to add RAM to your Mac? If so, I would do so. If not, then that would be a good reason for replacing the computer. If you add RAM, it's important to understand that the RAM you use is critical. Macs are very particular. You can buy reliable RAM from crucial.com or from macsales.com. Both are reliable vendors.
