Numbers: how to get URL from cell containing a link?

This question was asked by TimCoin several years ago and SGIII gave a great answer here: Numbers: how to get URL from cell contain… - Apple Community.

However the solution no longer seems to be working with Mac OS 12.6 ☹️

I'm restarting the now stale question:

Cell A contains text with a link (Example text), now I would like to have the cell next to it with only the link (specifically just after/including HTTP*). What formula do I need for this?

For example:

Cell A contains: Example text

Then only collect the URL: Apple in Cell B.

Here's the Shortcut pictured above (click the link in Safari and you can inspect the Shortcut and install it if you want).

And here are the results I got:

My steps:

  1. Select cells with links in column A
  2. Command-c to copy to clipboard
  3. Run the Shortcut.
  4. Click cell B2.
  5. Command-v to paste.

I have Smart Web and Email Links turned off (unchecked) at Edit > Substitutions in the menu.

Life has gotten easier with the advent of Shortcuts!

Fire up the Shortcuts app and drag in actions like this:

Just select the cell(s), command-c to copy to clipboard, then run the Shortcut. Then select a destination cell and command-v to paste.

Note that this Shortcut retrieves the entire URL not just the domain name.

If you want to extract just the domain name (it's a little unclear from your post) then you could easily a Numbers formula to extract it, or build that functionality into the Shortcut. Post if you need that.
