My airdrop works about half of the time

My airdrop sometimes works and sometimes it won't. Having read through all the steps and tried them all, I'm not sure what works and what does not work. It all seems very random. I don't want to read again about 8 things I can do. Are there ways to just bypass this thing? I'm losing my enthusiasm for iPhone if it is not integrated very well with my MacBook.
