I am assuming it is the iOS software version that you want to update.

When planning to update your iPhone's software, seems the first thing to do, is to always make a back-up copy of all your data.

That way, you can always restore your important files, photos, etc. if ever needed.

Apple support has an article online to help guide the update to the latest iOS version

You can just choose a method, and follow the steps in the article, if you want.

If the update doesn't appear on your device, use your computer to update your device manually.

if you're using a Mac with macOS Catalina or later,

or 

if you're using a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier or a Windows PC.
