iPhone Overheating is Getting Ridiculous

As the title says, I feel like this is an issue that has been going unaccounted for way too long now.

I just went from a 12 Pro to a 14 Pro Max, and while it is a bit better in terms of the temperature I am already experiencing discomfort in holding my phone.

No, I do not game, if anything calls cause the most problems — either FaceTIme or just regular calls.

The only fix right now? Taking the case off of my phone. Cases that are already as slim as can be because I am mindful of this problem. But I am not comfortable holding this expensive phone case free, adding the factor that it is an incredibly slippery phone.

Apple should have solutions to this already besides dimming my screen...

HOW ABOUT?

  • The option to turn off features that hog the processor on FaceTime?
  • How about having a performance mode that works well in hot environments while in public?
  • Most importantly, how about official apple cases, chargers, and products that are designed to cool the iPhone or work to prevent overheating?

I have owned iPhones since the 5C, and it just feels like I can't go 20 minutes without my phone feeling like it's going to burn up — a problem I frankly never complained about with my old phones. It makes no sense; if we just had the option to manage this by selectively turning off unnecessary features at will or just official products that took care of this...

I am frustrated because a new phone should not do this, especially when I am already conscious of this issue so the heaviest task I ever use (BASED SOLELY ON MY EXPERIENCE WITH WHAT HEATS UP MY PHONE) is FaceTime, and this is ridiculous. It is an app I will continue to use because it makes sense, so it needs a strip-naked version that doesn't cause my phone to have a meltdown.

The only feature that you could turn off that is extraneous and causing your iPhone to heat up (it is not overheating) would be the WiFi/Cellular Data connection. Because FaceTime uses streaming video/audio it is going to use more processing power with just that. There are no other items running that you could have custom options to turn off that would help. But what will really tax the entire phone is if you have a relatively weak WiFi or Cell Data connection which will strain everything. So hang up if you have a weak connection and it will rapidly cool.

If you are NOT seeing a message your iPhone is too hot and needs to cool down, it is NOT overheating. iPhone has built in temperature management to protect from actual overheating situations. It may get warm, which depending on use scenario can and often is quite normal.

That said, my iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are not exhibiting any extra heating in normal use. If your is, since this is a user to user only forum and no one here can diagnose or fix anything which may be causing this on your phone, it would be wise to schedule a time at the Apple Store Genius Bar and let Apple run diagnostics on your phone.

OK......I don't know what it is you're expecting from a user to user only forum? No one from Apple is here. We can't diagnose your phone if there is an issue with it even if we wanted to.

No one is accusing you of anything, certainly not ignorance. I can tell you I have absolutely NO unusual heating issues on iPhone 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max at all. Hence why I recommend you schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar for evaluation. Debating us won't get you much of anything here.

If you are in LA this is a huge problem for you not only weak signals due to interference or distance from a repeater (no on in LA wants one in their backyard) but also from the vast number of people connecting to the tower. And if you are near LAX, Burbank, or Van Nuys airport it is even worse (I'm near DFW airport). Using 5G will also heat up your iPhone rapidly and just add to the issue.

I personally have never had an issue with any of my iPhones overheating or feeling uncomfortable to touch EXCEPT once but that was an environment issue (high school football mom at a midday game at a stadium with no shade with temps in the high 90s in the South and using the camera to capture video and pics of my son in action. Warning of course popped up and couldn’t use the phone until it got back to a safe temp). Since you mentioned being able to selectively turn off unnecessary features I assume you have some features in mind that you would like to control (are these features you can’t turn off or are they ones you’re not sure where to locate in settings?). Have you suggested them to Apple via the feedback form? Of course there’s no guarantee the changes will come but that would be the first step to hoping Apple listens. If every iPhone you have ever had since the 5c has had the same issue and you don’t think you are doing anything intensive (although, using FaceTime would likely count as intensive depending on if you’re using cellular data or Wi-Fi, the signal, etc) then it makes me wonder if other factors aren’t coming into play. I’m not sure how strip naked FaceTime can become unless it only allows the lowest possible resolution (which most would hate), can only be used on Wi-Fi….maybe removing the option to do Group FaceTime’s…getting rid of automatic prominence (although you can turn that off in settings if you do in fact ever use Group FaceTime). At the end of the day…it doesn’t matter if you use an iPhone or any other smartphone…if you are using a video chat feature in the same situations you are having issues with your iPhone now….chances are you will have the same issues with the device getting too hot for your comfort.

All that being said….if you are repeatedly getting the warning message that your iPhone is too hot and needs to cool off (not sure if that’s actually happening for you. I know you said it’s uncomfortable to your touch but I’m not sure if you are actually experiencing where the phone has determined it’s too hot to operate temporarily) then of course you know to have Apple inspect it and replace if necessary. If you feel like it’s an Apple only problem and you have been sticking it out since the 5c….it may be time to decide if Apple is still for you if you don’t think Apple is doing anything to address what you may see as a major flaw. Or…if you think you can invent a cooling case that will help issues while being appealing to users you might have found your goldmine

Unfortunately part of the miscommunication is due to your probably not reading the terms of use. This forum is not designed to be a form of conversation, it is a user-to-user technical support site operated by Apple. If you are indeed getting the thermal shutdown I would make a Genius Bar appointment and get your phone looked at. If you are at a certain location where you were getting a poor signal when it happened I would report that to you cell service provider.

hey! I'm not getting the warning but it is obviously hot. I have not had the issue until my very last two iphones, the 12 and the 14.

I do live in Los Angeles, so factors of the heat here are at play, hence why I think Apple should engineer at the very least protective gear that mitigates the environmental circumstances of people living in certain areas. At least to have the option.

I am consistently writing feedback on the apple form by the way, so crossing my fingers.

Stripped down facetime would like this:

  • ability to turn off extra effects (that star button)
  • ability to turn off self view, even if the camera still on.
  • now that you mention it, a low resolution call option would actually be very cool. At least to have the option.
  • ability to have a mode that automatically does these things upon user selection of like an "outside mode," "dessert mode," etc.

The cooling case argument is great, and precisely why I think apple should engineer these themselves because the ones in the market are very limited.

okay to be clear I have received the message once or twice, when it obviously matters the most for the phone. Nevertheless, this does not change the perception of heat and how the phone DOES slow down for the sake of "management."

Basically, this can't be excusable. There should be options on the user end to have the phone cooler. If you're comfortable with your phone that's great. Doesn't change that there should be options.

Also, for the sake of not receiving face value resolutions:

I have previously visited the apple store when I had my 12 pro, and they exchanged it.

Furthermore, I used to be a technical specialist at the Apple store therefore I am cognizant of any or all possible solutions from their end. So my concern is not entirely ignorant, as I am surprised this issue just gets worse which I can only attribute to extra features the software keeps adding.

Sorry there's miscommunication. I am not trying to debate whatsoever so I apologize. I am using this forum as a form of conversation, I understand you are far more familiar with how this forum works and its intended use.

I can only assume others experience the same issue, and I'm just trying to have a public conversation. But also state that those solutions are avenues I have extensively explored, hence my use of something more niche.
