As stated, the download speed will be a major factor and can be longer than the actual upgrade.


The second factor is how old a model Mac is. Since newer Mac models tend to be faster than older Macs, obviously the newer Mac models will upgrade faster.


The third factor which may be almost equal to how old a Mac model is the amount of disk space available. Generally, 30-40 GB of free space is recommended but more space will allow the installer more room to shuffle things around.


So, how long it takes is not quite a simple answer, since each users machine and circumstances are different.
