eSIM is not a digital “service” … it’s a means to emplace the carrier’s applications and data —currently resident on a nanoSIM “chip” — onto an eSIM hardware “chip” permanently “embedded” inside your device.

Everything the nanoSIM did “before” is STILL being done “today” … only the means to get it into your device have changed.

eSIM still requires the embedded SIM hardware and the associated mobile network components (receiver, transmitter, antennae, etc.) to work.

None of these are installed in a WiFi Only iPad.

Software alone - no matter how cleverly designed - can NOT make an “automobile” into an “airplane.”
