This scam is happening so much that my 5th grader friend sent it to me on a different app. How are they reaching out like that, and what for? It doesn’t look like iMessage at ALL because it’s on a different app.

This scam is happening so much that my 5th grader friend sent it to me on a different app. How are they reaching out like that, and what for? It doesn’t look like iMessage at ALL because it’s on a different app.

They’re reachable, they’re manipulatable, and they have money, which means they’ll be targeted by scammers. We all are.
Some (too many) of the apps some schools are using are also being used for commercial purposes; for data collection and advertising purposes,.
Review the provided documentation for the app, block all unknown contacts if that app permits that, contact the entity that supports the app, or remove the app.
Also have a chat with the kids about manipulation and scams too, because the “kids are stupid” trope (albeit “ignorant” being a better description) didn’t arise from anywhere strange, and that ignorance is really quite profitable for some organizations. Seniors are also similarly and heavily targeted, though the scam details do differ.
