ssh command no longer working in terminal

I am relatively new to anything OS related or basically anything complex so responses might have to be dumbed down for me.

I am currently taking a course which uses a beaglebone. Up until now, ssh-ing the device has worked to get into it. Now no matter what, I cannot.

I have a PUTTY extension via XQuartz. Using a serial login to the usb port works for now to get me into the device, but I would like my ssh back.

The device is connected, IP proper and all , but every ssh results in this :

me@me-MacBook-Air ~ % ssh debian@192.168.6.2

ssh: connect to host 192.168.6.2 port 22: Operation timed out

I recently downloaded the most recent Monterey update but even after that it was working. Whats wrong?

Is your 192.168.6.2 system actually listening for an ssh connection? That is to say is sshd running on the device you want to connect with?

Ignore PuTTY, can you make the ssh connection from Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal ?

NOTE: If you are using a serial port, you can also use the 'screen' command to make connections to a serial port without using PuTTY. Google: "gnu screen serial port connections"
