4.0.2 guzzling my battery. Your's too?

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 4.0.2 on 11th Aug night, and I have experienced a much faster battery drain than before.

While my iPhone 4 used to sip battery with iOS 4.0.1 firmware, I can notice the difference that it is really draining a lot more battery than before, specially when I am using an app. On standby, however the battery drain issue is comparatively negligible.

What was surprising was, how can 4.0.2 be NOT better than 4.0.1, I mean it is not 4.0.0.2 right?
But I expect Apple to take heed on this and solve this issue ASAP.

Have any of your experienced the same?

Cheers!
Sam

No change here.

BTW, the only thing that 4.0.2 did is fix a security hole.

the percentage does go down of course whilst in standby, but not as much or as quickly as mine used to when using 4.0.1. I must say that when i was running 4.0.1 i was less than impressed with the battery life. I turn all my apps off after using them so none are running in the background, my 3G is turned off as i dont live in a 3g area and i only turn the wifi on when using it. And yet my battery needed to be charged everyday. Yet after updating today, my phone sat in standby for a few hours and hadnt lost a percent - then i turned the wifi on, used twitter, checked email, played some games and the battery had only go down 1 percent. Yesterday this would have sucked atleast 5-7 percent. I have noticed that some other users on this forum have noticed battery life improvement so i know its not just me imagining it =)

If i notice anything else everyone on here will be the first to know =)

Yes Designerdave,

I did question them about the recent iPhone 4 issues that they have witnessed and services so far. I could extract more information, as the store manager in that particular store, happens to be a good friend of mine.

I will wish you luck with your reservation. Do let us know how it went and what was the outcome?

Cheers!

Greetings,

If anything, my run time has improved, but maybe just a little - I'd notice it as I'm a heavy phone user. This update wasn't about battery issues, but as with any update, regardless of it's intent, will often have an effect on other functions. I'd say my phone is a bit more responsive, but that could be an illusion.

At any rate, the phone performs pretty much flawlessly as always. This phone is my organizer, as well as a simple phone - I'd be lost without it, at work, as well as home.

Cheers,
M.

Hi Monty!
I am glad to know that your run time has improved, like many other iPhone 4 users. I agree with you on the phone being more responsive after the update, though I am not sure what the other members of this forum think.

We love our device as it is as multitasking as ourselves and we dont need to keep many other things to manage our everyday lives, but just this one piece of machinery in our arsenal.

Do let us know about the battery performance, while using apps and charge/discharge times etc.

Cheers!

After seeing this, maybe the 4.1 update is the way to go according to Wikipedia's OS breakdown which mentions +Improved Battery life across the board+ and +Improved Battery performance will be more noticeable in the iPhone 4+.

Of course I am not a developer so I can't be held responsible for spoilers 🙂

Designerdave,

I agree with you on waiting for the 4.1 update, as the industry experts are also waiting for the same.

However, history tells us that trusting on Wikipedia for being a reliable resource is a mistake many professionals and students make. But Wikipedia has no background of being reliable as it is merely a user-generated content without any proofs and reasoning.

Dont worry, nobody is holding you responsible for anything here. These are discussions, to make our lives easier by sharing our mutual experiences.

have a nice weekend.

Cheers!

I have a guess that some of these battery issues could be explained by a runaway process eating battery and CPU. There might be more than one possibility, but in my case, I saw a big improvement by turning off mail:

Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Mail Account -> Mail = Off

This made such a big improvement that I think there was some sort of mail process continually running. But sadly I had to turn mail back on, for obvious reasons.

Other cases might be caused by other runaway processes.

Yeah, I noticed it too... my battery life dropped from 100% to 58% in less than 3 hours. Haven't really used the phone that much. Yesterday before the update, I didn't reach 60% until about 5 hours of heavy 3G websurfing and playing a few games.

As I'm typing this, I'm literally watching the battery life drop while the phone is just sitting there doing nothing. I shut down all the apps in the multi-tasking bar to see if it stops and I restarted the phone, but it's most definitely eating battery life faster than before.

Hi Tom!

Thanks for joining our discussion!

I guess this new A4 cpu is quite power efficient as I have just seen it on my brother's iPad. Also the settings that you are asking to turn off are anyways optional things and the use will vary person to person. While some of us might use selective mapping for using Apps, some others might keep even their location settings turned on.

So we want to find out, in totality, is the new update firmware 4.0.2 more battery efficient, or less, than the 4.0.1.

Surely I will try the settings you recommended and put the feedback here soon.

Cheers!

Hi Demarius!

Thanks for joining in.

I think, as Tom said, you should also try to switch off the runaway programs at the back and the settings such as location services.

Try once with minimum applications running in the background for a day from full charge to battery drain. Then try it with maximum apps, Wi-fi, location settings, et al. The average of these two should give us the approximate battery backup that you are getting.

Please let us know what you find out.

Cheers!

Just updating that my battery life has definately improved since updating to 4.0.2. I use my phone the same amount and as previously mentioned I don't let apps run in back ground or have 3G or wifi on when not in use and 4.0.1 sucked my battery life. 4.0.2 is so much better and after more than 24 hrs after updating I can't believe how much better the battery is. Also my partner has noticed his battery life has improved aswell. Don't know wat to say but the new update works for me 

I will surely be looking forward to 4.1 but would also love to know what my fellow iP4 users are experiencing with the updates happening every now and then.

I have two iPhone 4 units. One I use and one my wife uses. We have had no battery issues on 4.0, 4.0.1, or 4.0.2. Battery life is much better than on my 3GS and a somewhat better than hers was on her old 3G.
