4.0.2 guzzling my battery. Your's too?

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 4.0.2 on 11th Aug night, and I have experienced a much faster battery drain than before.

While my iPhone 4 used to sip battery with iOS 4.0.1 firmware, I can notice the difference that it is really draining a lot more battery than before, specially when I am using an app. On standby, however the battery drain issue is comparatively negligible.

What was surprising was, how can 4.0.2 be NOT better than 4.0.1, I mean it is not 4.0.0.2 right?
But I expect Apple to take heed on this and solve this issue ASAP.

Have any of your experienced the same?

Cheers!
Sam

No change here.

BTW, the only thing that 4.0.2 did is fix a security hole.

Uhm, I'm not sure if my iPhone 4's batterylife is as it should be..
Is it normal for it to lose several percent when only using apps like twitter and dailybooth?

I've yet to see my "Usage" tab reach 10 hours even.

Is this normal? I thought of doing the full-restore thing, but does that mean that I can't back it up and restore it from backup? If no, then is there a way I can get all my apps on it after the fullrestore without restoring from backup?

If I can't, then I've wasted alot of money on apps I can't get back!

Yes, because they use data, and data usage is up to 6 hours of cellular use. It may seem like a lot, but it is better than any other smart phones on the market (android, Palm Pre, etc)

I've yet to see my "Usage" tab reach 10 hours even.

Why would you expect it to when the phone's specs say 6 hours on 3G, 10 hours on WiFi?

Generally what I do is remove all active applications, turn off push notifications on select apps that aren't necessary to keep on, and set my Exchange to hourly updates.

Having active apps in the background (iOS4 features or not) can drain the battery as it's in active memory. FAS, Background Location, and File Transfer Services increase the chances to drain.

Exchange pinging on Push can also drain the power as it's instant checking, not hourly checking, to update your contacts, calendar, and mail along with MobileMe features if you have a Me account.

No Service, BT, WiFi, Backlight, 3G, Exchange, AT&T's phantom data services, etc all drain the power. You can hook up a wall charger or car charger if you have one to keep your power up to 100% or disable any you aren't using. Generally I airplane mode my phone during night time or disable all features except the phone to reserve my power.
-----------------------------
Also games music and videos will slowly drain the power. 3D games will rapidly decrease the power too.

Improvement.

Is it possible to reinstall prior operating system until they fix this?

No.

Since you apparently posted without reading the thread I repeat my earlier post for your benefit:

First, my battery life with 4.0 was much better that with 3.1.3. When I updated to 4.0.1 it dropped significantly, but, applying what I had discovered with previous releases I was able to fix it.

The key point is sudden battery drop is not a defect in the release you just installed, it is caused by the update process itself. It's random, and only affects a few people, but it is a real problem for those it does affect. If you read backwards in time through the forum you will see reports of battery performance problems after EVERY release since the first. And pleas to go back to the previous release to fix it. Those who do go back usually find the problem is not fixed. Thus, the only common factor is the fact that you updated, not what you updated to.

I've never seen a clear explanation of why this happens, but I assume it's because there is information stored in the phone that is corrupted by the update process, which then breaks an app or two after the update. Maybe it's just because code or data has a new location in the phone.

I've also observed, from my own experience, that the most common culprit is the mail app, especially if you have Push email. My fix, which has always worked for me, is to first Reset Network Settings and reboot, then go into Settings and delete the Push email account entirely. Reboot, and add it back.

Other users have reported that they have identified one particular app that causes their problem, usually social networking apps like Facebook.

But the key news is that you should try to fix it in the current release, not try to go back.

It was +The Next Web+ here: http://thenextweb.com/apple/2010/06/23/battery-life-on-the-iphone-4-lasts-38-hou rs-on-heavy-use-yes-38-hours/

I have a friend who smashed his screen, used his 3G instead of the iP4 and left the iP4 powered on over a period of time on his desk until he took it to the Apple Store. 14 days, 21 hours standby and 2 hours use were the final stats recorded with 3% remaining, wifi, 3g, push and bluetooth all on.

This falls in line with Apple's public claim of 300 hours standby as stated on their specs page: http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html and I now believe this too be true after receiving my third handset - current stats are now 2 days 4 hours with 5hrs 36 mins usage after it's first charge on Saturday. Of course, I still wait with baited breath until 4.1 is released as this will be an important update to many discovered issues with the handset.

Just to add to the number of people, I updated to 4.0.2 and noticed a huge battery drain issue. Just today from very light texting/browsing use, I have used 50% of my battery from 6am to 2:30pm. So halfway through my day with hardly even doing anything on the phone seems pretty off. I am going to try to reset to factory defaults this evening to see if it helps.

Should I leave everything wiped clean and start over, or is it safe to re-sync with my current apps and such? And if so, should I do the sync before or after I upgrade back to 4.0.2? If there is even that choice.

Thanks!

So far as my battery stat goes:

Usage: 1 hour 18 min.
Standby: 8 hours 39 Min.

Battery Percantage at 82%.

Had a few calls, 20 min. each, I do have wi-fi on when I get signal, otherwise i turn off wi-fi where there are no connections. I have notification off, and puch notification off, bluetooth off, and location service is off.

I check my iphone every hour for the 2 games i play. some light texting, I check FB every other hour.

So far I far i think I have a good battery on mine as well, note that this is my 1st replacement after the original one had gap and the yellow tint issue.

but as long as the battery last me the whole day I am fine with it, I charge my phone everyday regardless of where the % is at. Just so that I have a fresh battery every morning. I may not charge mine tonight and see how far the % goes down overnight. But I never let my battery run below 40%, once it hits that mark I immediately charge it.

but other than that, I don't have any battery drain issues.

Hi Matthew!

Thank you for joining the discussion!

There are many people in this forum, who have really provided some extremely valuable information, because of which, a lot of people who were facing difficulty before, have started getting benefits by simply following the discussed points.

As far as myself, right now my iPhone 4 shows 1 Day & 11 Hours of Standby, 5 hours & 32 Minutes of usage & I still have 33% battery left. Many people including Jayne, Designerdave, Lawrence Finch, myself, et al. (pardon me if I have forgot to mention anybody who contributed, I really mean everybody has done great contributions to this forum which I am sure, we all appreciate) have noticed that they are getting extremely phenomenal battery backup, specially in the standby which really means a lot.

I can surely recommend you, what worked for me:
1. Backup your phone
2. Reset your phone (this should reset it to factory settings)
3. Restart & Sync (this should bring everything you had previously, back to your handset.

also remember, if you have made any new purchases on your phone, please transfer it to iTunes before you reset your phone.

Cheers!
Sam

Hi Kwopau!

Thank you for joining the discussion!

We are glad to know that you are getting good backup. Just that researching on battery backups for a venture capitalist recently, I discovered that it is good for the life of batteries that at least once in a month (subjective to usage, type, size and mAh's of the battery) you should complete a full discharge cycle. This keeps it running for long and you get to utilize entire capacity for the whole battery life. So while always charging it every night might be a good idea, it would also be good if you can finish the discharge cycle as well for getting the best out of the battery.

Cheers!
Sam
