Startup on external screen

Dear all,
As my MacBook Pro screen is causing problems, I was wondering whether it is possible to set the external screen as standard. So that my Macbook Pro will start up, not on the laptop screen, but just on an external screen connected via HDMI.

Hopefully you guys can help me on this.
Thanks,
Jasper

+do I have to run specific diagnostics? Or is that done automatically?+

As long as you hold down 'shift' it's done automatically.

+I ran Disk utility and tried to repair the MAC OS X disk. Unfortunately the macbook seems to restart randomly+

That's weird and shouldn't happen, I can't think what would cause that behaviour to be honest.

OK the Kernel Panic Log does help 🙂

It's caused by GeForce Kexts (kernel extensions) that can be removed and it should fix the Boot panic (and might even fix the screen problem) instructions on what do to here (Boot holding s to force single user/command line mode then enter the commands then reboot)

Take it slowly and type each command carefully and let us know how it goes.

Hi Michael, thanks for your quick response!
As my screen problems are causing start-up problems, I can't put the macbook pro to sleep. So, can I start-up my macbook pro in this clamshell mode?
Thanks,
Jasper

PS. I get a kernel panic during start-up. It seems to be related to something graphical. According to apple replacing the screen will resolve the problem. Unfortunately I currently can't pay the required €1000. Therefore I was hoping an external screen could be a temporary solution.

So, you can't even start it up so therefore can't connect the externals and put it to sleep hmmm

"Kernel Panic at start up"
Have you Booted in Safe Mode to see what that finds and fixes ? (hold shift down at start and keep it held down for ages)
Can you Boot from the original Install DVD to run Disc Utility and Repair Disc ?
Have you tried moving/removing/swapping RAM sticks around to see if that impacts ?

Hi Mickael,
Thanks again for your your answer!

On safemode: I can startup in safe mode, but the screen still looks weird. Do I have to run specific diagnostics? Or is that done automatically?

On booting: Yes I managed to boot from the original install dvd. Again, the screen looks weird. I ran Disk utility and tried to repair the MAC OS X disk. Unfortunately the macbook seems to restart randomly to end up with the kernel panic again.

On memory: I tried other memory sticks. That didn't help.

This is what the screen generally looks like:

This is the kernel panic log:

Hopefully you can help me find out what the problem is..
Thanks,
Jasper
