I’m using migration assist, my old Mac has 128gb memory, new Mac 256gb memory. Old Mac isn’t maxed out for disk space, but when I want to migrate the files it says there isn’t enough space to transfer everything. That’s fine but when I go to check even one box of the “username” section it won’t let me just transfer only those files.

If you already set up that Mac and are already using it by logging in with a user name, then there may no longer be sufficient space to migrate a new user to that Mac.
The fact that you may be that same user does not matter. Using Migration Assistant always creates a "new user". If that is also you, it creates an additional "you", and two of you is one too many.
The solution is to erase that Mac and start over. Begin with Erase all content and settings on Mac - Apple Support. Follow each of those steps. When you arrive at Step 12, use the Setup Assistant to transfer content from your old Mac. The result will be the old you clothed in a new Mac.
