Without more information as to the circumstances in which your iPad is seemingly “turning off”, it is very difficult to provide any constructive view as to what might be causing the problem.

Are you using the iPad when it turns-off? Does the problem occur when using a particular App - or are all Apps similarly affected? Do you see any error messages? The more information that you can provide to characterise the problem, the more likely that contributors here will be able to provide useful advice or guidance.

In the meantime, connect your iPad to its Power Adapter and allow the iPad to charge, undisturbed, for at least an hour. Then, while still connected to external power, try a forced-restart:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

After restarting the iPad, keep the Power Adapter connected to your iPad. Is the iPad now stable - usable - and remaining powered-on? If so, wait until the iPad shows that you have achieved a 100% charge of its battery.

After the battery reaches 100%, while monitoring the indicated battery charge, disconnect the Power Adapter. What happens? Do you see the battery state quickly fall? Does the iPad immediately switch-off? If so, the battery has very likely reached the end of its usable working life, or has developed a fault.

If you are unable to make any headway in determining the problem, a visit to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) will be beneficial. The technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad, Power Adapter and cable(s). You will be in the best possible place to resolve the problem - or explore your available options.
