Connecting watch to iphone

I have recently bought an Apple Watch 8 and tried unsuccessfully to connect to my iPhone. It pairs but when I go to connect it tries but unpairs. It won’t update the software on it and just goes back to pairing screen to repair. My phone has ios15 tho am now updating to 16

Your phone needs to be running ios16.
