Write access to FAT32 USB drive blocked under macOS Monterey

I want to share a USB drive between a Windows computer and my Mac.

Everything I read says that my Mac should be able to read/write to FAT32 or ExtFAT USB drives, but I can't write to them.

I've tried the suggested fixes:

  • Change the permissions
  • Reformat the drive on my Mac
  • Use DiskUtility First Aid to check and fix the drive

but none of them work. I can read the drive but I can't write to it.

I've tried a number of USB drives but I get the same problem.

Here's a FAT16 drive. The permissions say: "You can only read", and there is no option to change this:

Here's a FAT32 drive. The permissions say: "You can only read", and there is no option to change this:

I even tried a NTFS drive formatted on a Windows computer on the basis that I might be able to install the drivers on my Mac to write to NTFS. But it doesn't look very promising. This time, it shows the permissions:

But even when I click unlock and try to change these, I get a message saying that I don't have permission to change this!

I do have admin access to my Mac - it's the only user on the Mac - so it doesn't make sense.

It also doesn't make sense that my user's permission says: "Read & Write", but above it there still a message saying: "You can only read".

It's like there is something overriding all of the permissions. I'm wondering whether it is some feature in Monterey. I'm running version 12.6:

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for answer.

So, there are no permissions for FAT and ExFAT, but I assume that a regular user has read/write access to FAT and ExFAT - at the moment it is saying I just have read access.

Yes - my Mac is managed by an organisation, and the user ID I use has Admin access - this is what it looks like:

Are you suggesting that there could be something in the managed Profiles that restricts me from writing to external drives? If so, what would this setting be? I've had a quick look at the Profiles but I can't see anything obvious. Here are some example ones:

There are no permissions on FAT or ExFAT, so there is no way for the OS to restrict it using permissions.

You say you have "admin access" to your Mac which makes me think your Mac is managed by someone else. You can restrict writing to external drives using configuration Profiles, which would be done by the organization managing the Mac.

Building on previous posting - You will need to Speak to the Administrator of the MDM ( Mobile Digital Management Service ) your Organization has Enrolled this computer into.

The set the Permissions and Level of Access this computer has.

In effect, they control the Computer, what it can be used for plus the level of Access regardless of you have a Admin Account on the specific Computer

I was replying to the world, @P. Philips, so that you knew it didn't need any further help!

Yes, the issue is fixed: I've checked my organisation's policy, and they don't allow write access to external drives, and that's why I can't write to them.

It was just very confusing, as it wasn't obvious why I couldn't do it.

MacOS doesn't say: "You can only read because your organisation has disabled write access to external drives" or something helpful like that. If it had, I wouldn't be here now.

That Specific Aspect - disabled write access to external drives " would be more the Responsibility and Function of the Admin of the MDM and does not lay at the feet of Apple.

That, I may be corrected by more learned Contributor but that is ok too.
