All devices have a band of temperatures within which it will operate normally - and temperatures which can temporarily prevent the device from operating - or cause permanent damage.
In general, the acceptable operating temperature range coincides with temperatures that human-beings themselves are comfortable in normal clothing. Exposure to excessively high temperatures can cause permanent damage to batteries, while the effects of low temperatures (typically display and battery) are usually temporary.
If your iPad temperature has returned to its normal temperature range, should difficulties persist, you might be best advised to have your iPad assessed for damage at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP):
