Currently the EXIF data can not be read on the iPad because the iOS3 SDK doesn't have that capability. With most photo editing apps (Photogene, PhotoForge are two good ones--there are others) you can know the pixel size because they require you to select the size when you save the photo. With Photogene you can share the photo with Twitter and Facebook, copy to clipboard, and email. You pick the resolution. With PhotoForge you can save or save and email.

There is a free app for the iPhone 4 that will view EXIF data from photos that have such data. It will not download to the iPad because it requires iOS4, but it is an indication of what will be available when iOS4 comes out this fall. I just downloaded it so I'm not sure of all it does yet. The name is "Exif and IPTC MetaData Browser".

I haven't seen an app yet that shows you the size of the file. I have Photo Pad and it doesn't show file size, it shows the Raw Size which is the uncompressed size.

One more thing...iTunes strips the metadata when you sync photos to the iDevice. I really wish iTunes wouldn't do that. I have given iTunes feedback listing my reasons why this practice is outdated and should be modified so that metadata is sent along with the photos when they are synced.

I suggest anyone who would like to see metadata on the iPhone, iPad, etc., also give Apple feedback suggesting this artificial limitation be removed from iTunes.

Using Photo Pad it does give you the raw file size but it also shows me the dimensions and adjusted file size of the display on screen, by using the scale tool it is possible to reduce the physical image size, the figures alter as you adjust the size, click the tick when you get to the required size, go back to properties and the new file size will be shown in my case my raw file size of 10Mb shows as 2.7 Mb display size with the longest side of 2000 pxls, using the scale tool I reduce the longest side to 1000 pxls, the file size as shown on screen is 0.7Mb.
It does not help with your metadata but does give you file size information if you resize your image.

just find out something that i guess depends prom iOS

i shoot 12Mp images are 4000x3000 both photoPad and filterstorm shows as info 2048x1536
i guess is an OS limitation or fault

also many software doesn't specify export size, PS express too:
from my 4000x3000 image
TiltShiftGen export "as original size" i get 1536x2048 (that actually is the same of the max size read)
Filterstorm same max export size
Masque saves at a very low size 768x1024

it seams that limit is 3Mp
i have to say that actually i'm a little disappointed because i wish for iPad more professional tools, i'm not a Pro but 3Mp is a low quality file since most camera are at list 7Mp
if i spend a little time to retouch my photos i would like to get a better quality

last i tried Pic info for iPhone but it dosen't work on iPad it reads a wrong image size

The files available to applications are the preview images used by the photos app. Filterstorm (and other apps) can only read these when importing from photos. When you use the camera connection kit, these images are created scaled to fit in a 2048x2048 box. However if you get the photo from being synced with your computer it can be a bit higher, and if you save it from an e-mail or from the web, it can be higher still.

I've recently found that if you copy the image from the photos app, it copies the full data and not the preview image data. The next version (submitted to apple for review a few days ago) of Filterstorm will give you the option to paste a jpg from your clipboard. That way you can get access to larger photo data from the camera connection kit.

Hi David,

How exactly does one do this. If I go into the photo app and copy a video, when I paste into email I just get the name sent. To copy I either press and hold and then press the little "Copy" button which appears (on the page showing all pix/videos), or use the little send icon and select Copy from this page or on the actual video viewing page. It always only emails the movie name, not the movie. Help appreciated!
