Apple watch pairs then immediately unpairs during set up

trying to set up my Apple se watch with my iphone 12 - phone software is 15.7 and up to date - everytime I get through the set up it pairs then immediately unpairs - will not stay paired. Please tell me how to troubleshoot

Your phone has to be running ios16 or higher,update your phone first.
