Apple Card is a credit card, you cannot put money on it, except to pay its due amount.

Apple Card - Apple

If you added money to your Apple ID, buy redeeming a gift card or adding funds, then any purchase form the App Store will be automatically charged to the balance first.

If you have no other payment method, then it must be taking money from your balance, otherwise, how would it be paying for your purchase exactly?
