Most external graphics enclosures require ThunderBolt-3, so the oldest MacBook Pro supported would be 2016 and later models.

The sonnet breakaway box 550 is no exception.

The USB on a 2010 model is USB 2. That is good for at most, 480 M bit/sec.

the ThunderBolt-2 on that MacBook Pro is good for 20 G bits/sec, about 40 times faster. That is still not as fast as the Sonnet device expects, but is getting somewhat closer.

Apple sells a ThunderBolt-3 <-> ThunderBolt-2 adapter for about US$50. but even at that, no guarantees it will work.
