is there a way to force quit my phone when the side buttons don't work?

Do you mean the side buttons are physically broken? If that’s the case then you will have to get the phone repaired. Here are instructions for force-restarting an iPhone→If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen. The instructions in that link ALWAYS work if followed carefully unless the phone has suffered a catastrophic hardware failure.
