Uploading data to iCloud, “finish uploading then erase” says I need wi-fi but am on wi-fi…

While transferring from my iPhone 13 pro to my new 14 Pro I’ve encountered an issue with the uploading data to iCloud section before erasing the phone.

From the “erase this phone” screen, I press the continue button then enter my pass code, this brings me to the “uploading data to iCloud” screen. There is a warning that says “if you erase now, you may lose photos and other data that are being uploaded to iCloud”. Then the button below says “finish upload, then erase” highlighted in blue or “erase now” when I click the finish upload, then erase to be sure that all of my files are uploaded to iCloud It prompts me with “Wi-Fi or cellular required” and gives me the button options of cancel or settings. The problem is I have Wi-Fi on and am connected… the settings button brings me to Wi-Fi settings which is irrelevant because all the settings are in the proper positions, and the cancel button leaves me on the uploading data to iCloud screen.

I obviously don’t want to lose any data so I’m stuck.

Why is my phone telling me It is uploading data to iCloud while not giving me the option to upload data to iCloud while I am clearly on Wi-Fi?

how do I make sure all my data is uploaded and transferred to my new phone before I do a forced erase all and send in the old phone?

Hi, Ianternational,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

Before you erase your iPhone, you should sign out of all accounts, including iCloud. This will sign you out of features like Find My, and also stop any data transfers to or from iCloud. You'll be prompted to keep or erase certain data when you go through this. Choose to keep it on the phone to ensure you don't lose anything, then verify on your new iPhone if any data is missing before you erase the old phone.

You mentioned that when trying to complete this process, that you receive an alert that your device is not connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data. Have you tried connecting to a different Wi-Fi network? If so, does the same behavior occur?

If you log in on the iCloud website, do you appear to be missing any Photos, Contacts, or other information found there? If everything looks good, you can manually create a backup by going to Settings > Tap Account > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Backup Now. This would allow you to restore from an iCloud backup instead, if the process you're using isn't working for you.
