You will be waiting a very long time. The iPhone 7 CPU cannot support iOS 16 or later, you would have to update several items of hardware on the logic board to run iOS 16. It will be far easier and cheaper to buy a new iPhone.

Just to be clear.
Your iPhone7 will NOT be receiving a capability upGRADE. EVER.
15.x is as far as it’s EVER going capability-wise. (currently 15.7)
IF Apple identifies another bug or security vulnerability in the future, you’ll receive an upDATE. e.g. to 15.7.1
The upDATE will patch the vulnerability or bug but not provide any more capability.

Because the iPhone 7 does not meet the minimum hardware requirements to run iOS 16.
