Did IOS16 change the Facetime UI so that it can make calls using the cellular network (not cellular data)

Did IOS16 change the Facetime UI so that it can make calls using the cellular network (not cellular data but actual cell phone call) rather than using Wi-Fi data if you push the wrong button in the Facetime App under a contact/calls info screen (the screen you get if you press the the little green "i" in a circle)?

iPhone 6s, iOS 14

I just tested them. I turned off the Wi-Fi and cellular data then selected one of the phone numbers (under the row of icons) and it wrang the cellphone number. So it is not using FaceTime and it is not using data.

No, it was making a regular cellular call.

So beware, the FaceTime app does not just use FaceTime, it can also use your cellular network!

No, this is incorrect. That is not a Facetime button. In fact, your own experiment proves that Facetime can't make a call without using cellular data. That's why you go the "no network connection" message.

When the phone icon at the top (between message and video) said call and I pressed it, it gave me a list of ways of calling including FaceTime, and a couple of phone numbers, but when it had tuned to say FaceTime under it, it said no network connection.

In what app are you seeing this? Do you mean in Contacts? That is the audio call button. If you tap on it, you can choose whether you want to make a Facetime audio call (using data) or a cellular voice call. If the person has multiple numbers, you'll all get to pick which one you want to call. Depending on what other apps you have installed, you may have additional options. For example, I have Teams installed on my phone so that's an option for me.

If I tap on "Video", I have the option of making a Facetime video call or a Teams Video call.

If the person is someone who doesn't have an iPhone when you won't get the Facetime option when you tap.

We have to differentiate between FaceTime and the FaceTime app. The FaceTime app can make cellular calls, but FaceTime can't. Most people would not differentiate between FaceTime and the FaceTime App.

No, we actually don't. The Facetime app is just a different way to access the same thing. It's just like you can access your contacts through the "Contacts" app or through the "Contacts" tap in the "Phone" app. Same information, same service. In fact, for a long time, there was no Facetime app on the iPhone. Everything was accessed through the Phone app.

Regardless, it doesn't change the fact that Facetime, however you access it only makes calls over cellular data or WiFi. If you turn cellular data and WiFi off, it won't work.

So what does it mean when the phone icon at the top (between message and video) when it says call rather than FaceTime under it. Also what happens when you select one of the phone numbers under that (which I think can also be a land line). I have a suspicion that one or more of these do not use data (cell or wifi), but use your carriers cellular network (not using data).

This is not the phone contacts, but I think it is the FaceTime contacts. When in FaceTime it shows you the call history. To the right of each call is a green "i" in a circle and if you press that it goes to a type of contact entry, but it is different from the phone contacts.

No, the contacts you see there are the same as the ones in the "Contacts" app or the "Phone" app.
