AirPods tap function omission

Hello folks,

I’ve only owned AirPods 2nd gen.

I’d like to upgrade to the 3rd gen or AirPods Pro 2nd gen.

After months of research it seems that the tap and double tap (etc…) capabilities; pause / play music / answer calls etc have been discontinued after the 2nd gen AirPods…

I can only use the 2nd gen because I work and cycle with gloves, wear hoods a lot so tapping is perfect without ever having to touch the AirPods! I never use Siri…so tapping is all I have…

Is it true that there is NO tapping tech available on models after the 2nd gen effectively meaning I am stuck with them?

cheers!!!

Hello nicholaspaulsmith,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities!

It is true that there is a slight difference in using the AirPods; however, they may still work for you. Check out the following information as these controls apply to the AirPods Pro as well. You can compare the controls of additional AirPods models here: AirPods controls - Apple Support

AirPods (3rd generation) controls

The location of the force sensor on AirPods (3rd generation), along the stem of each of your AirPods.

With the force sensor on the stem of both AirPods (3rd generation), you can do any of the following:

Play and pause audio: Press the stem. To resume playback, press it again.

Play the next track: Double-press the stem.

Play the previous track: Triple-press the stem.

Answer a call: When you receive a call, press the stem.

Activate Siri: Press and hold the stem, then ask questions, control apps, and more.

Have a great day!
