iPhone 13 Pro Max OEM screen replacement error message "unknown part"

I had my screen replaced with an OEM screen by an independent Apple service provider. I was running iOS 16 beta software. After replacement I now have an error stating "unkown part". Figured it wasn't compatible with beta so I went back to original operating system 16.1. (20B5056e). Still have message and also found I'm unable to update software under "Software Update' link. It says "Unable to check for Update" an error occurred while checking... Anybody run into this with a genuine Apple screen replacement? I'm assuming with a replacement screen, or part, the diagnostic software at the service provider contacts Apple and updates the part for the phone and this process failed.

Only Apple or Apple Authorized Service Providers have access to Original Authentic Parts. I suspect whoever you used to do the repair may have misled you to believe they were installing an OEM screen, but I highly doubt this "independent" service would actually be able to install OEM parts.

Regardless, you'll have to take the back to them. And if the part is not OEM as it likely is not, the unknown part message will not go away. And Apple will unlikely be willing to service a phone which has been tampered with by anyone other than Apple or an actual Apple Authorized Service Provider. For example, in the US, BestBuy is an Authorized Service Provider. And there are hardly any others out there.

Yes, I'm aware of all the information you have mentioned. Still doesn't help my current situation. I will be going back to the installer this week and talking to them about the issue, as they said they would have it resolved through Apple by now, and I have not heard anything. I'm assuming their Apple 'System Configuration Software' was inadequate with the beta iOS software I was using, as I was enrolled in beta testing through Apple. It then would not allow it to be changed through their software and now I have a conflict. If not resolved by them, I will be asking for a refund, and going to another authorized Apple repair service provider to see if this can be resolved. It appears that the 'Apple Configuration software' is not current at least at the repair service I used. I just hope it's not this new program 'system configuration' that Apple now uses to verify parts, that will create more problems for people with newer phones. It would be nice to resolve this through Apple and a connection with support rather than the process of paying repair charges for software they have installed in the phone and the ability not to verify their own parts.

Why does Apple require use of System Configuration to complete a repair?

System Configuration is a post repair software tool that completes the repair for genuine Apple parts and ensures a genuine Apple part — designed, tested, and manufactured for Apple quality and performance standards — was installed. Running System Configuration has a number of purposes that vary based on the part replaced. For example, displays, cameras, battery, and ambient light sensors have calibration values that are customized to each individual part during manufacturing. Transferring these values ensures maximum performance and quality after a repair.

Hello, JrsKjs.

Let's start out by taking a look at this support article which may help explain this message you are seeing: iPhone parts and service history - Apple Support. The article explains:

"An Unknown Part  message appears if the part installation is incomplete or if the part:

    • Was replaced with a nongenuine part
    • Was already used or installed in another iPhone
    • Isn't functioning as expected"

Please also note this section:

"Importance of service by trained technicians using genuine Apple parts

For most customers, visiting a professional repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair. These providers include Apple and Apple Authorized Service Providers, and Independent Repair Providers, who have access to genuine Apple parts.* Repairs performed by untrained individuals using nongenuine parts might affect the safety and functionality of the device. Genuine Apple parts are designed to fit precisely within the device. Additionally, repairs that don't properly replace screws or cowlings might leave behind loose parts that could damage the battery, cause overheating, or result in injury.

Depending on your location, you can get your iPhone serviced — in or out of warranty — by visiting an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, or by shipping your iPhone to an Apple Repair Center. Genuine Apple parts are also available for out-of-warranty repairs from Independent Repair Providers or through Self Service Repair."

Let us know if we can help with anything else at all or if this doesn't settle your issue so we can look into this further with you. Thanks and have a fabulous day!
