What material is the watch backing made of?

My husband would love to get the new Apple Watch. But he is curious if the back of the watch is made of nickel? It makes his wrists break out in hives and itch. He can wear a watch if he coats the back with a clear fingernail polish. Obviously he doesn’t want to go that with an Apple Watch.

Series 8:

Ceramic and sapphire crystal back

SE:

Nylon composite and sapphire crystal back

Ultra:

Ceramic and sapphire crystal back

I had same nickel allergy on old standard watches. I had no problem with aluminium body S2, S4 and S6 watch and nothing so far on Ultra

It depends on which model he purchases. Apple Watches are made in Aluminum, Stainless Steel and Titantium (the New Ultra). The sensors on the back of the watch are housed in high grade ceramics. If I were him, I'd buy the Apple Watch Stainless (costs more for sure, but is so very worth it). In addition to the virtually indestructible 316 Stainless Steel, the watch crystal is Sapphire, which is virtually scratch proof.
