Can AirTags be used in your luggage for traveling?

My main concern is if I'm on a long-haul flight with a change of planes. It sounds like the tag could begin beeping anywhere from 8-24 hours after it last sees my iPhone, and deplete the battery. Not ideal for a transoceanic trip.
