Clock timer and iOS 16 lock screen

I've been using the built-in timer on the Clock app for years. It's useful for timing baking, grilling, and other things. It has been brilliant up until now.

This morning, I was timing some turnovers (22 minutes). At one point, I took out my iPhone and saw the timer widget indicating about 18 minutes left. So I put it back in my pocket.

Bad choice. After a while, I realized that the timer had not gone off. I checked the turnovers, and totally burned. I looked at the iPhone, and I guess the timer had stopped when I had looked at it before. I suppose brushing the screen had paused it at precisely the 18-minute point I'd seen before.

That destroys the value of this timer. I go to the timer on my watch or leave the phone on a countertop. I suppose there is a way to delete that widget function, but it would have been a better approach for me to include it manually rather that having it automatically "upgraded".

Just sayin'

Oh I get it. It’s all my fault.

I use a function that worked for years, and then when it is “enhanced” I need to go disable other stuff that was functional until the change.

Nope. And Apple can pay attention to their software or not. They have a choice just like I do.

Fully agree with you that the feature of having the clock timer on the lock screen is VERY frustrating. Even if I darken my screen, I often walk around my home holding my phone to carry it from place to place, so my hand will cause the screen to activate and the timer will inevitably get paused. I wish there was a way to have a true lock screen without any controls on it. The same thing happens with my music all the time. But the timer is worse because you can totally end up ruining your cooking or leaving laundry in dryer too long etc.

het179's solution is a great find (thanks!), but it still doesn't absolve Apple from implementing a dumb change that reduces the usefullness and reliability of a simple one function app that has existed since IOS 3 or earlier. It still is ridiculous that I now have to choose between a) not being able to check how much time is left on the timer or b) risk accidentally cancelling.

yeah - wow - just happened for me too. Whoever added this feature forgot to do an actual user study.

Showing the remaining time on the lock screen is fine, but be able to pause or cancel WITHOUT any type of confirmation is just plain stupid.

When you start a timer, you expect that timer to run until it expires or until you deliberately stops it. Not because you grab your phone a put it in your pocket.

Hopefully this will be fixed in the next update

100% agree, same thing with the volume. You shouldn’t be able to manipulate the volume while locked and in your pocket. I can’t count the amount of times I’ve had headphones in with my phone in my pocket and something hits the volume up and it maxs the volume out blowing out my eardrums

So if you agree 100% that you should not be able to unlock a firearm by tipping it, why do you think my advice to turn off raise to wake is garbage? You are not being logical in your thinking. Which one of us do you agree with?

Please think twice about using words like garbage when volunteer users are trying to get YOU out of a problem that I don't have. Guess why I don't have that problem.

I have the exact same issue. While it’s nice to see how much time is left on the timer, it should not be so easy to pause/cancel it from the lock screen. Please improve so that we all stop accidentally pausing/cancelling important timers we set.

I need to see other important alerts for work, so I cant just turn off raise to wake, and may forget to do that just for this one app. This issue made me accidentally take a long lunch at work —and my phone was on full do not disturb—. It’s a ridiculous feature, bc it is way to sensitive. Definitely using that link, thanks.

Might as well just turn the whole phone off and use an egg timer. This is an actual issue and if your only solution is to disable features that are used in other parts of the phone then it’s not a solution

If I put my phone on lock it should prevent any buttons taking action while it’s in my pocket unless I log back into my phone and unlock it.

Think of a safety clip on a firearm. You should only be able to lock/unlock it with one method. Not if you hold it to the side it suddenly unlocks the clip. Ridiculous.

I wouldn’t have used the term “garbage” myself and I appreciate volunteers trying to help. However, I will say, I have raise to wake turned off and it is still possible to disrupt the alarm. The issue for me is holding the phone when walking around my house (which I need to do, obviously). My hand will inadvertently touch the timer controls. So I have to be extremely cautious. It just shouldn’t be that easy to mess it up. I have submitted a suggestion at the suggestion page but I am gonna assume they’ll never change it haha. That way if they do, it will be a pleasant surprise
