Airpods Pro replacement rejected

I have Airpods Pro which started to crackle quite painfully, to the point they cannot be used anymore. I took them to the local authorized service (no Apple Store in Czech Republic), but they were rejected for replacement due to being too new of a model. I was offered a repair for pretty much the same price as if buying a new set of Airpods.

My Airpods Pro model is A2084 and I have them since approximately March 2021.

I bought another set of Airpods Pro in March 2022 and these are starting to crackle as well, especially in loud environment. These are the model A2083.

Was the replacement of model A2084 rejected wrongly? Is there a way to get these Airpods replaced anyway?

I had higher expectations - both for the lifetime of Airpods, as well as for the replacement program to be more clear...

Hello leda_a_a,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help get your AirPods Pro sounding perfectly again or repaired if needed. Start with these steps for the sound issue:

"If your AirPods Pro (1st generation) make crackling or static sounds

Follow these steps.

  1. Make sure that you have the latest software on your connected iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac.
  2. Check that your connected device is nearby, and there's no wireless interference or obstructions between you and your device
  3. Listen to audio from a different app to see if the app causes the issue.

If you still experience sound quality issues—or if the issues increase in loud environments, with exercise, or while talking on the phone—refer to AirPods Pro Service Program for Sound Issues."

This Apple Support page has the full details: If your AirPods Pro (1st generation) make crackling or static sounds - Apple Support

If a replacement or repair is needed, please continue to work with your local Apple Authorized Service Provider for exact details.

We hope this helps to isolate the issue to get the AirPods Pro working great again.

Cheers!

Hello - I'm in the exact same boat. I have a pair of APP G1 that were made in ~Jan 2021 (and therefore fall outside the Oct 2020 cut-off for the Service Program). I talked extensively with various levels of Apple support staff - and although they were all nice, they all just said "yeah - it looks like you have the same problem as the pre Oct 2020 units, we can't cover you". Very disappointing.

At this point I can send them in for repair (at the cost of new units, as you observed). I'm using them in normal mode for now, but the ANC was the main feature I was looking for with the APP. Now I can't use it and Apple isn't willing to fess up to what is obviously a widespread manufacturing issue.

Exactly the same problem here in Brazil. In less than a year and a half. The Apple service I took attested that it is exactly the same problem as the year before, that they are performing the exchange. But the iCare attendant suggested that the defect was caused by the user. He broke the right phone and in a deeper test the technician said that the left side also has the defect and will break. I bought mine in January 2021. I reaffirm, the defect reported by the technician is exactly the same as the one he himself has already seen and the store changed it for a factory defect. But the Apple company insists that the problem is not theirs for an expensive phone that we think will last a long time. Sorry for possible English mistakes, I used the translator to turn my revolt into English text.

No worries @MacrosCentari - it's very disappointing that Apple is taking the stance that only the <Oct-2020 units are impacted. If any Apple peeps are following this thread - if there's anything you can do to help we'd really appreciate it! The forum is pretty full of similar reports and all the denial of coverage by the Support Program is doing is making loyal customers frustrated with the AirPods Pro. It certainly isn't incentivizing me to buy G2s...

Hello justin_900,

all these steps were done prior to handing the AirPods Pro for the Service Program. As mentioned in the original post, I was given the option to pay for the repair for the price of new set of AirPods Pro.

Another option (also suggested by the authorised service provider) is to get a new pair, which would add up to being my third pair in two years.

As you can see from the other reactions, the issue is common and the options given by the service providers are the same. Hence I hope Apple will look into it and allow free replacement of all malfunctioning headphones regardless of their date of manufacture, especially when the problem is specifically confirmed by the service provider.

I’m not sure if you’ll see this since the post is a month old but when your airpods were rejected did they show you the test they ran on them or why they don’t qualify since the issue persists in later models? I’ve scheduled an appointment since I heard a rattling and sharp squealing noises in ANC and Transparency mode. However, after I looked up their manufacture date, they’re in the second week of October 2020 and I don’t think they’d qualify. I’m just curious if Support ever got back with you about a replacement since a lot of people's with APP after the October 2020 cutoff are experiencing the same issues.

Hello,

After I took them in, the person at the Genius Bar gave me a very nebulous answer like “yeah, this could be the same issue but since they’re made after Oct 2020 it can’t be the same thing”. Obviously this is the party line any post October 2020 APP units are supposed to be addressed with which is just disappointing. They did encourage me to keep an eye on the service program since they had “a lot” of people in my situation rolling in with early 2021 APP units with the ANC/transparency issue.

Good luck!

Hey, I did not see the test performed, the document from diagnostics done said, that the issue reported was indeed detected, but because my AirPods are not one of the serial numbers which are considered faulty by Apple and eligible for free replacement, the were rejected on this basis only.

Anywho, because my even newer model of AirPods Pro is starting to develop pretty much the same problem, if you have a suggestion for similar headphones for less $$$, I am all ears.
