Mail app Read Only

My Mail App is now Read Only. (10.13.6) Mac Pro 2012

Problem started when Mail did not recognise any passwords

I have deleted the mail accounts and tried to reinstall them

I tried deleting all user library Mail files

I have reinstalled OS High Sierra 10.13.6

I do not have cloud keychain

Nothing works - and unfortunately it is impossible to delete Mail

Can anyone help?

Sadly not

  1. It seems mail.com does not allow non US customers to purchase - which is odd. But they don't have any kind of help
  2. when i try to create a Mail account in Mail (apple) I enter the name email and password and click Sign-in and then I get

I click Done button which becomes Next and stays Next forever. It does not get past this.

So I can add a new GMail account but impossible to add 'other Mail' account

I don't understand - it used to work seamlesslesly it makes zero sense now it is useless :-(

Who is your eMail provider?

Start with this...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Am using the old AOL Mail.com

Still in Read Only. Found some old thread about using terminal - that was useless (I couldn't understand it)

I have deleted all mail accounts AND then deleted icloud

I put icloud back - which is "inactive" I don't know how to fix that.

When I try to add a new mail account I enter the email password and am presented with apps mail and notes only to link to the account. I click Next but nothing happens

Mail account is working fine - I am using it on Chrome am logged-in and password is fine

Sooo frustrating - but do appreciate your help

Seems that is not it. Helpful article but I was already doing this

When I get to the select the apps to use with the account only mail and notes are available - click any combination and Done. then the button goes to Next but that it is it. Nothing happens.

I deleted all of the files from user - Library - Mail and bought back all of the files from Time Machine (when mail was working)

Result is lots of recovered files 'on my Mac' - but Mail is still Read Only.

Am going to have to consider Outlook - this Mail is truly buggered

Forgot to add:

When I try to send a test message from on my mac recovered mail - I get a message:

Mail wants to export key "<key>" from your keychain. I enter the keychain password (same as mac)

Then I get the Mail message 'Cannot send message' because account does not have outgoing mail server.

The edit STMP server detail are all there

Connection doctor is empty

I enter the server password and it opens the Mail Accounts window

Only iCloud is there and is active = green

So I try again - I enter Add a mail account ((other mail account) AND sign-in. And I am back at the 'Select apps you want to use with this account = Mail and Notes' press Done button and then Next. AND nothing happens.

So I tried another test - with a Gmail account - and that is working...

Might be Mail.com is actually blocking the connection - I have read they now want premium to enable IMAP or POP

So it could be the reason apple Mail is read only - because it is connected to Mail.com - who are now blocking IMAP unless they get cash. I will try later to enable Premium with one of my Mail accounts and see if that works. Expensive but what a pain getting a new email address...

Great find! :)

Let’s see if there’s a locked file interfering.

Open Terminal & paste this command in & prefs enter, it’ll ask for an admin password & not echo what you type, wait for it to finish which will be an empty prompt unless it prints out some locked files, or Operation not permitted…

cd /;sudo find . -type f -flags +uchg

Wait for it to finish & see if anything has Mail listed in it.

Hi there

Tried that both in the original - and now what is the new ID. Mail did not appear and both had equal / same items.

Have kinda given-up. It must be the original profile is corrupted. I have created a new profile (always make sure NEVER enter iCloud details at set-up or they get connected - very annoying). So I have migrated after a good clean-up my files from the old user ID to the new one - and mail is working fine in the new ID

Something broke :-(
