MacBook Pro M1 draining battery fast when shutdown/ in sleep mode

Hello guys! I just bought a used 2020 MacBook Pro M1 and I noticed that when shut down or in sleep mode, battery drains really fast, like 30% in like 12 hours. In normal use, the battery holds up really good, but as soon as I turn it off, starts draining really fast. (94% health 47 charge cycle)

I tried everything, put os again, turn off bluetooth and wifi before shutting down, nothing worked. The previous owner told me that 98% of the time the laptop stayed plugged in, but I've read that it is not a problem and macOs takes care of that.

What should I do? Thank you!

Hi Sracasanu,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

While what you are describing may not be out-of-the-ordinary, you can run diagnostics to make sure your battery is working correctly, as well as other hardware in the Mac. Here's how: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac.

"Prepare your Mac

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Disconnect all external devices except keyboard, mouse, display, Ethernet connection (if applicable), and connection to AC power.
  3. Make sure that your Mac is on a hard, flat, stable surface with good ventilation.

Apple silicon

  1. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release when you see the startup options window, which includes a gear icon labeled Options.
  3. Press Command (⌘)-D on your keyboard.

Intel processor

  1. Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold the D key on your keyboard as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release when you see a progress bar or you're asked to choose a language."

Any codes thrown in this process will be found here: Apple Diagnostics reference codes.

Also the tips found here may help you conserve the battery: Get help with your Mac laptop battery. This tip seems particularly relevant to your situation.

"Turn off “Enable Power Nap while on battery power.” This setting prevents your Mac from checking for mail or other iCloud updates during sleep which improves standby time."

Have a fantastic day!

I have already done that... everything working fine... Now another strange thing is happening: my laptop charges really slow, like it doesn't update the procentage, but after a restart it will show a much higher procentage, that one being correct. So i don't know what to do, maybe changing the battery will do the trick?

Sracasanu,

To help with the battery charging slow, you can check to see if optimize battery charging is enabled. This may cause the battery to charge slowly. Take a look at the guidance below for more information:

1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences.
2. Click Battery, then select Battery in the sidebar.
Battery Preferences window with "Optimized battery charging" selected
3. Deselect "Optimized battery charging", then click Turn Off or Turn Off Until Tomorrow.

This information is from If battery charging is paused or on hold on your Mac - Apple Support.

Take care.
