For qualifying devices that remain within hardware/repair support, Apple will typically exchange an iPad for a reconditioned device of the same model and specification in lieu of actually repairing the the iPad. The cost for this service is exactly the same as that of performing the equivalent repair - and is typically 60% of the “as new” cost of the device. The reconditioned item will include a new battery - taking care of this element as well.

The cost of Battery service alone is typically $99 USD (or local currency equivalent); again, for qualifying devices, you will typically be offered a reconditioned iPad of the same model and specification in lieu of returning your existing iPad to you.

In both cases, offering an exchange service is much quicker for you - as you will not be without your iPad for an extended period.

In the perhaps unlikely event of still having an active AppleCare+ plan for such an old model of iPad, the cost of service/battery-replacement will be limited to a small excess/deductible fee.

Costs for your device in your geographic region can be found here:

iPad Service & Repair - Apple Support

You can use Apple’s mail-in repair service, or perhaps more usefully visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where your iPad can be assessed and necessary arrangements made:

Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

Given the relative age of your iPad and the comparatively high cost of a screen repair, having an old model iPad repaired may be uneconomic - your money perhaps being better spent on a newer model iPad. Even the modestly priced entry-level iPad9 is likely to offer considerable performance gains in addition to extended longevity over a replacement iPad Air2.
