Connecting an apple keyboard to a new M2 MacBook Air

I've got an old battery keyboard that still works with my 11 year old iMac and I'd like to use it with my new MacBook Air. It sees the keyboard and tries to connect using the generated passcode number followed by enter but just fails to connect. Is it just too old and incompatible?
