Why won't my Apple Watch update?

iPhone is SE using IOS 16.02. The only thing I know to do it put the watch on a charger and keep the iPhone close. I had it charging all night with the phone next to the watch. Automatic Update is on. Nothing so far. Yes, it was paired to an iPhone 7. I have not seen an error message, it just says Automatic Update on, and the message below that.
You probably have already done this, but you can go to Apple Watch settings on your iPhone, scroll down to General, and then click on the second option - Software Update. You can update your watch manually from there.

Turn off automatic updates then try again or;
