Why do my AirPods keep resetting to their default settings even after I reset them?

I've reset the AirPods, multiple times. My phone's IOS is up to date. Yet, every day my AirPods seem to revert to their default settings. I'm about to get rid of them, it's so annoying. Has anyone found a permanent fix to this problem? Seems to be happening to enough people that I'd think Apple would address it.
