How does the AirPods case handle charging AirPods with different charge left

When the left and right AirPods have different recent use, e.g., listening with only the L AirPod in place, how does the AirPods charging case handle it? Is the charging for L & R managed independent of the other? Does it charge both at a rate that optimizes completing the charge for the R, and only when that is 100%, charge up the remaining on the L?

This really is mostly curiosity, brought about because sometimes I extend podcast listening time when by listening with one pod for a bit and then the other, or I take one out to stop playback when talking to someone, restart with one pod in place, and forget about it for a while, etc.

That was the key to my question, thank you. The linked article does not make that clear but it does include helpful points like 15 minutes in the case gives 3 hours listening time. (I presume under optimum conditions). thanks!
