All screenshot shortcuts not working... why?

I recently bought a new M1 Macbook pro running Monterey version 12.6. I'm trying to figure out how to use the mac screenshot shortcuts; however, they simply aren't working for reasons I cannot figure out despite hours of searching the internet for a solution. Literally every guide I can find on the internet says the screenshot shortcuts are set by default to Shift+cmd+3, 4, or 5 for various types of screenshots. However, these don't seem to do anything at best and give me the "I can't do that" system dinging noise at worst. I've checked my keyboard preferences and all options for screenshot shortcuts are selected. I am able to take screenshots by going to Preview > File > Take Screeenshots. Does anyone know what might be the issue with my screenshot shortcuts? It's driving me nuts!

P.s. I'm totally new to posting here so please be understanding if I've accidentally violated any housekeeping rules for this forum. There are a few previous posts here from years ago that I found while googling this issue but none of the solutions offered in those responses have solved this yet.
