Old iTunes now Music !!

I have got a very large old iTunes library which since the changes does not show up on my devices, although I have got the whole library backed up on an external hard drive,

If I were to open the HD up and connect it to my MacBook Pro will I still have the control I had choosing what I wanted to choose and sync or would the whole library have to be copied over, I appreciate I'm sounding a bit stupid here but Im not familiar with the "new" set up

To be fair I don't even know how to access my old iTunes albums through apple, I just stream and listen through the Music App

Kind Regards

In principle Music is supposed to be able to open and convert an old iTunes Library.itl file into the new .musiclibrary format. In practice this seems to stall for some people in Monterey. Workarounds are to import an XML version of the database if it exists, or perform the conversion in Catalina or Big Sur. I've converted a number of libraries by exchange of email for those that don't have access to a suitable system themselves. If you need help you can email a link to your .itl in iCloud Drive, OneDrive or similar and I can post back the converted database. My email address is in my profile.
