As it turns out, iOS 16 offers an option to recover deleted messages. This option may allow you to find those SMS messages again.

Were the messages deleted? If so, you wouldn’t be able to recover the messages. If you didn’t delete them and you have a backup from before the messages went missing, you could restore that backup and see if the messages return. Just so you know, other data from that backup would be restored as well. You can read about restoring a backup here:
