Mac System Data increases significantly after deleting documents from Hard Drive.

iMac Pro (2017) Running Monterey 12.6. System Data size is growing out of control after deleting and/or moving large files to external drive (including about 200G of Logic and Final Cut files). Original effort was to free up hard drive space (no good deed goes unpunished) which I have done in the past successfully but now struggling to resolve the system data explosion. The 1TB hard drive is showing only 5GB available with system data at 661 GB. Tried some recommendations from this community and other web resources but to no avail. Ran EtreCheck but the report is a little over my head. Any suggestions!? thanks

That is all of those deleted files being moved to a local snapshot. It should clear up within 24 hours when the snapshot is automatically deleted.

Since you have EtreCheck, you could force the clean up with EtreCheck’s clean up button in the Storage tool.

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

Would start by following the good advise form previous Contributor.

As for the Report itself, not seeing anything specific that would account for the Drive getting to the Critical Low Disk Space other than the TM Backup is Not Set to run automatically on any type of a Schedule.

As heavily configure as this machine is, obviously there are a lot of Changes all sorts of files occurring. With TM Backup not firing automatically, the Snap Shot are building up on the Internal Drive. They will only, in theory, clear once the TM Backup has been allowed to run.

Suggest Terminal command below

\tmutil listlocalsnapshots /

The Terminal will show a list of local snapshots with names

There are no known Windows-like Viruses in the wild that self replicate and affect macOS, because of the underling UNIX  Foundation and Permission Limitation.

Additionally, and specific to Big Sur macOS 11 and Monterey macOS 12, the Operating System resides in a Sealed and Read Only Volume that can not be opened by the User and protects against from “ Bad Actor “ Software.

The Only thing this Antivirus software is protecting is the Bank Account of the Developers and for zero return to the User aside from the problems this software creates.

Good News ( I think). Unit was shut down for several hours today and after start up, everything seems to be ok. Hard drive now showing 401 GD availability and System Data dropped to 256 GB. These numbers are more indicative of files I moved and/or deleted.

Thank You P. Phillips and Etresoft for your guidance and prompt responses to my issue. And thanks for the advice on the third party anti virus software.
