Pics show "PVT" in messages on my MacBook Air, and don't appear when clicked.

An earlier question about this got the response, "spread with thumb/finger to expand."

Please note - this is not about the phone. It's on the Mac. It is forcing me to view the pic/video in another program, rather than just pop out and show/play like it used to.

Please advise if it's a setting, or a bug. Thank you.

Is it possible that the sender of those photos marked them as "hidden" in the Photos app?

If so, it is possible those photos are intended to be private, and not shared. You haven't explained where the problematic photos arose though — whether they were sent by you or to you — so I have very little information to work with.

"in messages". would it help to say "in Messages"? as in the app named - Messages?

Previous behavior:

view messages, where pic/video is small and contained in message.

click on pic/video, and it pops out large.

New behavior:

view messages, where pic/video is either small/contained in message or shows a blank box with the initials "PVT."

click on pic/video, and instead of popping out large, another blank popout is shown, stating, "open in Preview?" or other app.

Please go back and read what I'm saying.

Start with, "Pics show "PVT" in messages. I.e., THEY ARE NOT APPEARING IN THE MESSAGE. They are grayed out with the letters "PVT." Clicking on them - they are STILL GRAYED OUT WITH THE LETTERS "PVT."

It doesn't make sense to me, either - but it is happening nevertheless. HENCE MY COMING HERE TO TRY TO GET HELP. If it were an easy answer, I would have found it.

If you want to help - help.

Thank you.

A lack of cooperation on your part is not helping me to understand your concern. I asked if you were using Apple's iMessage service or are they plain text messages. Plain text (SMS / MMS) messages are handled by the individual cellular phone service carrier, in which perhaps they are not being sent in a manner the Messages app can understand.

In any event I suggest you contact Apple directly: click Get Support.

Once again:

I stated the problematic app - MESSAGES (Apple hasn't called it "iMessages" for quite some time). You responded re: "pictures on the Photos app..." ???? Then you randomly decided that I wanted to "manipulate" photos. Not even close.

Again: the expected, actual behavior of pics/video in Messages is that - when clicked on, the pic/vid pops out large and viewable without having to open up another app. Instead, it presents as a gray box with an invitation to open with Preview.

It's fine if you don't have an answer. Just don't come back here without listening to what I said, and/or offering up solutions that aren't applicable to the stated problem, or saying I'm not cooperating.

Dear Apple: this is my first time with a question in 2 decades of Apple products - this has not been a good experience.
