Can you get spyware by downloading a photo in whatsapp

Hello, I ask this because I don't know what information to believe. I have been reading on the internet that it is possible to get malware/spyware with a photo on WhatsApp. I want to know if I can get a virus from a photo that someone sent me through a messaging application like whatsapp. My iphone is not jailbroken or anything like that, but pegassus could infect some devices, so I don't know if it's possible for "normal" people to get spyware through downloaded videos or photos on WhatsApp
