Frozen XS max transfer to 12

Hi. I’d really appreciate some help.

i have an iPhone XS Max which froze a number of months ago (June) and I’ve not been able to get back into it.

I’ve since been given an iPhone 12 pro max of the same Gb size as the X.

i believe that my XS crashed during a back up and or update (overnight) and I’ve not been able to get it to update by connecting to iTunes. When I look at my iCloud back up, it appears to be almost entirely up to date, which is great, but I can’t check things like voice memos (which I really do want to be available to me again).

I now have an empty 12 pro max...of the same size. I’d like to know if it would be straightforward to get the data to it from iCloud. Are there any things which I need to be aware of (for example will the data remain on the X for possible future retrieval or will backing up to a new phone erase the old data from the old device). Also ... how likely is it that the voice memos will transfer across? They do not appear in the iCloud backup which is visible online... but I know that not all data is accessible in this way anyway x

are there any possible issues which I need to be aware of to avoid data loss?

All advice welcome x

Thank you

Hello Casperino80,

Great questions! For your iPhone XS Max, you would need to be able to turn it on to access any data on it (that wasn't stored with iCloud or in a backup). The good new is, when you restore the data to your new iPhone, it does not remove any data from other devices.

For your iCloud backup, the only way to view the contents of a backup is to restore it to your device. You also are not able to pick and choose which data to restore; everything in the backup is restored. You do mention that your new iPhone has no data on it, but please still keep in mind that when restoring a backup, all data on the device is erased from the date of the backup. Here are the steps to restore your backup: Use iCloud to transfer data from your previous iOS or iPadOS device to your new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

For your Voice Memos, if you have this turned on in iCloud, they will automatically sync when you sign in to your iCloud account on your iPhone: Sign in with your Apple ID - Apple Support

If you do not have Voice Memos turned on in iCloud, they should be included in your iCloud backup. Any data that is already stored in iCloud isn't included in the backup as shown in these guides:

When you said it froze, did you follow the standard steps to “unfreeze” it:

First, charge it for 1 hour. Then:

  • Press and quickly release VOLUME UP

   THEN

  • Press and quickly release VOLUME DOWN

   THEN

  • Hold the SIDE button until an Apple logo appears (15-30 seconds), ignoring "slide to power off" if it appears

The operative word here is QUICKLY; and try it a couple of times, the timing is a little tricky.
