How to close Tom Tom navigation app?

When I walk out of my car I want to close down my tom tom app. I hit the home button, but all of a sudden, whilst waiting in the butcher shop my phone tells me to go to the left...
Very annoying... How do I close down TomTom?

iMacG5 and PowerbookG4, Mac OS X (10.6.4), both computers have maxed out ram

As it is one of the real multitasking apps, Double tap home button and you will find it listed. Tap and hold on it to bring up options to close.

Also, apps that do multitask usually have some option in the app itself to say stop. Thus you can just find that button in the app before trying to close it. If it is stopped before closing, then it will suspend out as opposed to keep running.

I don't have the app so don't know. That link talks about how apps that are meant to run in the background can only do so when they are told to do so. If you think of the iPod app, if you play something and leave, it runs. If you want it to stop the thought process is you go hit the stop button before leaving thus won't be in background when closed. Apps that multitask should be intuitive that you stop them via the app and thus not have to think about the dock.

These are all work arounds. Contact Tom Tom and ask for a suspend option. That way their app will comply with your situation better. This is your phone not theirs. When you get out of your car their app should give you the option to suspend nav while you are doing what you want. It can not know the difference between you checking email while driving ( who does that? ) and getting out of the car at a rest stop or what ever. The Developer needs to provide an option for that situation. Contact them. They will thank you believe me. This is how features are developed. Thankfully.

As I wrote in my multitasking article TomTom automatically manages shutting down. If you are navigating and arrive at your destination, when you shut down the app it will just go to the suspend state and not keep using the background location.

If you are still navigating for whatever reason, hit the home button and leave TomTom in the background, within a few mins of being disconnect from a charger you will get a popup asking if you would like to continue using TomTom. If you don't click ok, it will close.
